stumbling-block

stumbling-block
The Greek word is skandalon (1 Cor. 1:23) and means an obstacle which could cause a fall (Lev. 19:14) or a fundamental difficulty for belief (Gal. 5:11). It is wrong for convinced believers to put a stumbling-block in the way of less assured or hesitant believers (Rom. 14:13). Some modern theologians have urged that elements in traditional Christian faith which are incredible to the modern educated mind should be reinterpreted, so that the real skandalon to belief in Christ should be made plain, rather than antiquated irrelevancies.
